Radiation from Cellphone Towers

The danger of cellphone tower or base station radiation has once again been confirmed by research that proves radio waves from the stations trigger and promotes the growth of cancers.

Cell biologist Fiorenzo Marinelli and his team at the National Research Council in Bologna, Italy, investigated whether radio waves had any effect on leukaemia cells, as previous studies indicated that leukaemia might be more common among mobile phone users.

The team exposed leukaemia cells in the lab to 900-megahertz radio waves at a power level of 1 milliwatt. This is the kind of exposure experienced by people, and especially children, living or schooling near to inappropriately sited base stations. Many European mobile networks' outputs are typically 2 watts. (Though at times they use only one-tenth of this power it is still well in excess of 1 milliwatt.)

Marinelli's results show a direct health threat from cellphone base stations and provide fresh evidence that radiation from all devices using these frequencies and power levels play an important role in activating genes that can trigger cancers and help cancer cells multiply aggressively.

"We don't know what the effects are on healthy human cells," says Marinelli. "But in leukaemia cells the response is always the same." Marinelli suspects the radiation initially damages DNA and that this interferes with the cells' biochemical signals in a way that ultimately triggers a 'defensive' mechanism.

A strong link has been found between radiation emitted by cellphones and base stations (cellphone towers) and the early onset of Alzheimer's and dementia. Prolonged exposure destroy cells in the parts of the brain responsible for memory, movement and learning.

A lot of published research, including earlier British research done in 2002 by molecular toxicologist David de Pomerai at the University of Nottingham, showed that radio waves can cause biological effects that are not due to heating. According to de Pomerai scientific consensus has emerged that the radiation from cellphone base stations and cellphones indirectly damages DNA by affecting its repair system. If the DNA repair mechanism does not work as well as it should, mutations in cells can accumulate, with disastrous consequences. "Cells with unrepaired DNA damage are likely to be far more aggressively cancerous," he says.
